The Evolution of Functional Medicine Certification

On behalf of The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) Board of Directors, Executive Leadership, and Team, we are pleased to announce that the new Functional Medicine Certification Program™ is set to launch in 2026!

As a result of changes to the program, we have discontinued the ability to formally apply to the program if you have not yet completed part of the required coursework, including the Hormone, Bioenergetics, GI, and Environmental Health APMs. Prospective candidates are still encouraged to start and/or continue on with their IFM courses regardless of when they plan to certify. You do not have to wait until the new application is developed to start your IFM coursework. You can view the full calendar of our courses offered online. As a reminder, Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP) and the 6 Advanced Practice Modules (APMs) will all apply to the 100-hour functional medicine education requirement for the new application and program in development. We recommend starting with those courses and completing them in the meantime as your schedule and resources allow.

Over the next 18 months, the current IFM certification program will be replaced by the new Functional Medicine Certification Program™. Developed with input from thousands of functional medicine practitioners, this new program serves as a certification for the field of functional medicine and assesses the competencies of applying functional medicine across various scopes of licensure.
